When you visit Italy, there are certain places you simply cannot miss. Rome, Florence, and Venice immediately come to mind. But what about the hidden gems? The places that are a little less known but no less beautiful or historic? If you’re looking for a stunning and off-the-beaten-path destination, look no further than Volpaia. This tiny, well preserved medieval village is located in central Chianti in the hills of Tuscany and home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country. Whether you’re interested in wine tasting, hiking, or simply taking in the incredible views, Volpaia is definitely worth a stop!
As you approach Volpaia, you’ll immediately notice the walls and two of the original six towers that are still standing. The largest of the two towers houses the Castello di Volpaia wine shop and osteria. While you’re there, be sure to try some of the locally produced wine. It’s some of the best in the area!
This charming village offers visitors a glimpse into medieval life while still providing all the amenities of a modern tourist destination. From delicious local wine to picturesque walking paths, Volpaia has something for everyone.
If you’re interested in hiking, be sure to check out the trails that wind through the hills around Volpaia. The views from the top are absolutely stunning, and it’s a great way to get some exercise while enjoying the beauty of Tuscany.
One of my FAVORITE meals was in Volpaia
I had read so many great reviews of Ristorante La Bottega di Volpaia, it was the main reason we stopped in this village on our drive down to southern Tuscany. Enjoying the unbelievable view on the terrace, a great wine list and incredible food made this a truly memorable lunch. It was one of my favorite stops on our road trip through the Tuscan Countryside. It was a true hidden gem. I would suggest making a reservation in advance. We did not but since we arrived right when they opened for lunch, we were able to get a table.
Volpaia was the hometown of a famous Florentine family of clock- and instrument-makers. Nowadays, it’s an attractive tourist destination with three restaurants, a small grocery, and some vacation rental apartments. Even if you’re not staying in the village overnight, it’s worth taking some time to stroll through the streets and soak up the atmosphere. It’s like stepping back in time.
Part of Volpaia has been incorporated into the Castello di Volpaia winery which belongs to the Stianti family. If you have time, stop by and visit the winery’s restaurant, wine shop or book a tour of some of the cellars.
Finally, be sure to take some time to simply wander through the charming streets of Volpaia. This village is home to some of the most beautiful architecture in Italy, and it’s a great place to spend an afternoon relaxing and taking in the sights and sounds of rural Tuscany.
