Are you planning your first trip to Paris? If so, you’re in for a treat! This beautiful city has something for everyone. However, if you’re not familiar with the area, it can be a little daunting. Don’t worry – I’m here to help. Here are 10 basic tips for visiting Paris for the first time. Check back for future posts that go into more details on this magical city. Enjoy!
Although Paris is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, it’s still possible to feel like a newcomer. When most people think of Paris, they think of romance, history, and luxury. And while those things are all a big part of what makes Paris so amazing, there is much more to this city than that. To make the most of your trip it is important to do your research and have these basic things in mind.
1) Know what to expect. Paris isn’t a small city – it covers an area of 105 square miles – so don’t try to see everything at once. Plan your sightseeing carefully, and allow yourself plenty of time to wander around and get lost in the neighborhoods.
2) Purchase a transit pass. Walking is great, but sometimes public transportation is just more convenient and less tiring. Public transportation in Paris is extensive and efficient, so save yourself money (and hassle) by purchasing a transit pass.
3) Download a map app. A good map app will help you navigate the city with ease; my favorite is Citymapper.
4) Learn some basic French phrases before you go. You’ll undoubtedly need them while shopping, dining out, or trying to order a drink! While many people in Paris speak English, it’s always appreciated if you can at least say “bonjour” and “merci.” Learning some basic phrases will go a long way toward making your visit more enjoyable.
5) When to visit – Come during peak season if you can afford it – July and August are the busiest months in Paris – as there will be more events and activities happening than at other times of year. If you’re on a budget, consider visiting during winter (November-February), when prices are lower and attractions are moderately busy.
6) Visit museums early – Many museums in Paris get very crowded later in the day. If there’s a particular museum you really want to see, try to visit first thing in the morning so that you can avoid the crowds. You can also look into Skip the Line tickets or book a tour to avoid long lines.
7) Check for special exhibits and events happening in town while you’re planning your trip – many museums offer discounted rates during off-peak hours, or free admission on certain days of the week/month).
8 )Stay away from big chain hotels; instead, look for independent hotels or Airbnb apartments located close to public transportation (<$100/night).
9) Eat like a local! Try some delicious French dishes (like croissants, frog legs, and escargot), but also venture out into other cuisines (Indian, Thai,, Italian…) – there’s something for everyone in Paris’ fantastic food scene .
And finally…10.) Embrace la vie parisienne! Enjoying coffee or wine on a terrace overlooking the Seine , people-watching at one of the city’s many parks , or simply strolling through charming neighborhoods …there’s no better way to experience all that Paris has to offer.”
